Logistics

  • Transportation - see below
  • Food: - need somebody to do a Costco Run.
  • Supplies - Giant PostIt paper sheets, markers, tape. If we go to the beach and it's windy we may need to instead bring something like the portable whiteboard tablets from the ME310 loft as paper won't stay put.

2010 Kickoff Meeting

For 2010 we are scheduling the "kick off the summer" offsite on Friday, June 11. Not everbody can make it on this day, but it was the best of the immediate options.
  • Where: An idea that came up in talking with John and Dan was Big Basin. Why? Because lots of facilities and... John has never been there (for shame!). Another possibility is to pick another beach site (e.g. Wilder Ranch or...) -- anywhere that has good picnic facilities for a largish group.
  • Congregate around 8:45am at BDML, be en route by 9:00.
  • Need somebody (Dan?) to organize who gets what at Costco & etc.
  • Need to figure out carpooling
  • What to prepare -- bring your summer (through Sept. at least) calendar so that we can discuss everybody's plans and also know when various people will be out of town, etc.

^^I can bring a bike rack (fits 2-3 bikes) but it does not actually fit on the car that I would have available to drive. But it does fit most other cars...

**Will be riding my motorcycle.

***Will drive but have to get back to school early if necessary, no later than 3PM.

****Will drive if necessary. Otherwise, who wants to make it a bike ride?

Timing and Directions

We have the facility reserved between 9:00am and 5:00pm including use of kitchen. For those who are carpooling, we meet at 08:30 at MERL 132. Timing sort of conflicts with Rise.RiSE telecon... Maybe we can have 1 person dial in on cell phone if there is anything important being discussed...

Directions:

  • Take I280 to I85
  • Get off at the Saratoga exit and go into Saratoga center
  • Proceed straight at main intersection and continue on Route 9 (Big Basin Way)
  • Go about 2.5 miles and take a hard left near a bridge on the road into Sanborn Park
  • Drive up steep road till you see sign for hostel on your right

Preparations

  • We should pick up something like TOGOs subs + drinks and stuff to take with us
  • We should pick up sticky posterboards & markers
  • Take a couple of laptops for note taking
  • Take a camera or two
  • Take hats, water bottles, sunscreen, good walking shoes, maybe jackets?

Possible Agenda

  • Introductions
  • Brief outlines of major projects over summer
  • Personal goals/objectives statements from each person
  • Lunch
  • Go for a walk -- Here is one possibility
  • Reconvene & revisit goals/objectives
  • Plan to be home in time for supper

Food Options

Closest Togo's is perhaps Menlo Park @ 700 El Camino Real:
Google Map - Opens @ 10am
Or maybe @Shoreline & 101?

Other possibilites in Saratoga on the way.

**: JonathanKarpick: I'm planning on leaving directly from San Mateo. Actually have room for 3 more if it helps anybody...

***: SanjayDastoor: My car is needed for moving tomorrow, due to a mixup at the storage place. I've taken myself off the list since there are enough rides. If that changes, I'll reclaim my car.

Not attending:

  • AMcClung? - Unfortunately, I will likely have to help relatives (in town for graduation) move stuff from the airport.
  • SalomonTrujillo - I will already be on a plane headed for Ohio for a family memorial service.

Venue

Sanborn was not available and Palo Alto Foothills was complicated to reserve and seemed less interesting than Montara so I reserved us for Montara Point. -mrc

Main site: http://www.norcalhostels.org/montara/ Directions: 280 to 92 West over the hill, turn right when you get to US 1 at the coast (Half Moon Bay). "Go north for 7 miles to the hostel which is located between Moss Beach and Montara at 16th Street. For safety we recommend that you continue into Montara and then turn around, in order to enter the hostel driveway going southbound. There have been several accidents involving vehicles making left turns from the northbound lane."

We have the facility reserved between 10:30am and 3:30pm including use of kitchen.

Preparations

  • We should pick up something like TOGOs subs + drinks and stuff to take with us
  • We should pick up sticky posterboards & markers
  • Take a couple of laptops for note taking
  • Take a camera
  • Take windbreakers & etc.

Timing sort of conflicts with Rise.RiSE telecon... Maybe we should attend the 9:30 lab working meeting and then have 1 person per car use a cell phone to dial in while we drive to the beach.
