About Me

Hi! I’m Soy Choi, a first-year PhD student in Mechanical Engineering. I’m thrilled to be joining the BDML family and can’t wait for the years ahead.
My research passion lies in building robotic hands that can feel — developing proprioceptive systems for dexterous manipulation and human–robot interaction.
Before coming to Stanford, I studied mechanical engineering (with a minor in global health and health policy) at Harvard. At Harvard, I worked in the Microrobotics Lab with Prof. Rob Wood on tactile sensing for robotic grippers, and with Project CETI on gentle suction-cup robotics for studying sperm whale communication.
Outside the lab, I am passionate about educational equity and founded STEAM Engine and K-STEM For All, nonprofits focused on making robotics and hands-on science accessible to students around the world.
I grew up in Melbourne, Florida, and I’m happiest when I’m outdoors — golfing, surfing, or exploring new places. I also play the violin and viola, and love jamming with friends.

Current Work
This year, I’m excited to dive into projects on proprioceptive underwater robotic hands and explore new directions at the intersection of soft robotics, sensing, and human–robot interaction. Please stay tuned — updates coming soon!
